Rice bacterial streak disease, also known as streptococcal disease, is a serious bacterial infection caused by the genus *Auricularia* and is classified as a major plant quarantine pest. The disease thrives under high temperature and humidity conditions, especially when accompanied by heavy rain, hail, or flooding, which creates numerous wounds on rice leaves. Prolonged deep-water irrigation and excessive or late application of nitrogen fertilizer can further exacerbate the problem. In mild cases, the disease incidence may be around 10%, but in severe outbreaks, it can reduce rice yields by 40% to 60%.
**Symptoms and Damage:**
The disease primarily affects the leaves of rice plants. Initially, small, dark green, translucent spots appear along the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, these lesions expand in the direction of the veins, forming thin, brownish lines or short dashes. When humidity is high, the infected areas exude a yellowish, sticky substance that resembles pus. These symptoms are less pronounced compared to bacterial leaf blight. After drying, the affected areas form small, yellowish, gum-like particles that look like dots and do not easily fall off. In severe cases, the lesions merge into irregular tan or bluish-white patches. While similar in appearance to bacterial leaf blight, the presence of transparent, thin strips can be observed under light. Severe infections cause leaves to curl, and the entire field may appear yellowish or white.
**Control Strategies:**
As this disease is highly infectious, relying solely on chemical control once an outbreak occurs is often ineffective. A comprehensive approach combining multiple prevention and control measures is essential.
1. **Quarantine Measures:** Strictly regulate seed movement to prevent the spread of the disease across regions.
2. **Cultural Practices:** Use disease-resistant rice varieties, as different cultivars have varying levels of susceptibility. Implement shallow water irrigation and ensure proper drainage. Avoid overuse of nitrogen fertilizer and apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to strengthen plant resistance and reduce the risk of excessive growth that can lead to disease.
3. **Chemical Control:** Once the first signs of infection are detected, spray 20% Yeqingshuang (Yekuning) wettable powder at a rate of 100 g per mu with 50 liters of water. If the effect is not satisfactory, mix it with streptomycin sulfate or agricultural streptomycin diluted at 4000 times, or strong chlorine extract at 2500 times for better results. Before sowing, soak seeds in fresh water for 12–24 hours, then in a 300-fold solution of 85% strong chlorine for another 12–24 hours. Apply strong chlorine extract to seedlings during the three-leaf stage and before transplanting. During the heading stage, a mixture of 4% copper ammonium solution, 20% Yeqingshuang, and potassium permanganate mixed with saltwater has shown up to 80% effectiveness in controlling the disease.
