Seed cultivation
Newly hatched larvae exhibit distinct black pigmentation on the head and dorsal region. These larvae can be raised in shallow tanks or troughs measuring 2 to 3 meters in length, 1 to 1.5 meters in width, and 0.3 meters in depth. The ideal stocking density is between 2,000 to 4,000 individuals per square meter. For every 100,000 larvae, a daily feeding of cooked egg yolk is recommended. After being ground into a fine paste, the mixture is fed directly into the water. It's important to change the water twice a day to maintain cleanliness and oxygen levels. By day three, the larvae begin to feed actively, and by day ten, they are ready for further growth. Once the fry reach 10 mm in length, they can be sold as artificial seedlings.
Larvae measuring 5 to 10 mm in length are typically raised until they grow to 5–7 cm in size during the spring of the following year or the second year of their life, reaching a weight of 1 to 4 grams. This stage is known as small loach breeding or larval rearing. Cultivation can take place in paddy fields or ponds, with ponds offering better control and results. When raising in ponds, it’s recommended to add 20–30 cm of organic fertilizer into the mud before stocking. This helps cultivate natural food sources like plankton. The stocking density is usually around 800–1,000 per square meter.
After stocking, feeding begins with egg yolk and soy milk, followed by soy flour as the larvae grow. Later stages involve feeding rice bran, wheat bran, and bean residue. The daily feeding amount starts at 2–5% of the loach’s body weight and gradually increases to about 10%. Feeding should occur once in the morning and once in the afternoon, ensuring that all food is consumed within two hours. Water quality must be maintained through regular fertilization to keep the water rich in nutrients. At the end of the year or in the following spring, the fish can be transferred to larger ponds. If the density becomes too high, they may be moved to another pond during the fall of the same year.
