Cucumber varieties with strong fruiting abilities were carefully selected for optimal growth. To address curved fruits, a hormonal treatment was applied to the inner surface of the curved cucumbers using a 30 mg/kg gibberellin (90%) solution before and after flowering. Over several days, this treatment helped straighten the melons effectively.
Once the fruit begins to bend, a shallow vertical cut is made on the back of the curved cucumber, followed by 1–3 cross-cuts. The depth should be about 0.5 cm, and the length between 2–5 cm. This technique helps correct the curvature, and the resulting wounds are almost invisible when the fruit is sold.
A small tile, brick, or stone (4 cm long and 2 cm wide) is placed under the cucumber stem using fine hemp or plastic rope. When the cucumber reaches 10 cm in length, the object can be used to gently guide it into a straight position as it grows, ensuring proper alignment.
If the plant suffers from poor nutrition, high planting density, insufficient light, excessive weeds, or dry soil, it may develop bent fruits. On the other hand, over-fertilization can lead to overly lush foliage and large, misshapen fruits. Proper management, including balanced fertilization, moderate watering, and timely pest control, is essential to ensure smooth fruit development.
To prevent premature leaf aging, a combination of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, microbial, and multi-element mineral fertilizers should be used in a balanced manner. Applying 20 kg of microbial agents and 20–30 kg of mineral fertilizers after flowering helps strengthen root health, supports nutrient uptake, and prevents early leaf decline, which can reduce the occurrence of malformed fruits. It's also important not to remove lower leaves too early unless they begin to yellow.
Controlling the yield per plant is crucial. Excessive fruiting can stress the plant, leading to rapid leaf aging and bent fruits. To prevent this, spraying the leaves with Shuofeng 481 (0.1% canola lactone soluble powder diluted 7000–9000 times) or compound microbial fertilizer (200 times dilution) every 7–9 days can significantly improve fruit shape and quality.
For mechanical bending issues, vines should be properly supported and any obstructions removed so that the fruits can hang naturally. Tendrils and other physical barriers must also be eliminated to prevent unnecessary bending. Most curved fruits result from environmental stress, temperature fluctuations, or weak plants. If the fruit cannot grow straight, it usually doesn’t affect yield or market value. Removing the curved fruit can help promote the growth of straighter, higher-quality fruits in the following harvests.
