Rice bacterial streak disease, also known as bacterial leaf streak, is a serious plant disease caused by bacteria in the genus *Xanthomonas*. It is considered a quarantine pest in many regions. The disease thrives under high temperature and humidity conditions, especially when accompanied by heavy rain, hail, or flooding, which create numerous wounds on rice leaves. Prolonged deep-water irrigation and excessive or late application of nitrogen fertilizer can worsen the situation. In mild cases, the infection rate may be below 10%, but in severe outbreaks, yield losses can reach 40% to 60%.
**Symptoms and Damage:**
The disease primarily affects the leaves of rice plants. Initially, small, dark green, translucent spots appear along the leaf veins. As the lesions grow, they remain confined by the veins, forming thin, brownish lines or short dashes. When the field is humid, the infected areas exude a yellowish, sticky substance that resembles pus. These droplets are dense and often form clusters. Unlike bacterial leaf blight, the number of these spots is relatively smaller. After drying, the affected areas become small, yellowish, gum-like particles arranged in dotted lines and do not easily fall off. In severe cases, the lesions merge into irregular tan or bluish-white patches. Under light, many transparent, thin strips can be observed. Severely infected leaves curl, and the entire field may turn yellowish-white.
**Control Measures:**
Since the disease is highly contagious, relying solely on chemical control once it appears is usually ineffective. A comprehensive approach combining multiple strategies is recommended.
1. **Quarantine:** Strictly regulate seed movement to prevent the spread of the disease.
2. **Agricultural Practices:** Use resistant rice varieties and avoid overuse of nitrogen fertilizers. Apply phosphorus and potassium to enhance plant resistance and prevent excessive vegetative growth, which can increase susceptibility. Maintain shallow water levels and ensure timely drainage.
3. **Chemical Control:** Once the disease is detected, apply 20% Yeqingshuang (Yekuning) wettable powder at 100g per mu mixed with 50 liters of water. If the effect is not satisfactory, mix it with streptomycin sulfate or agricultural streptomycin diluted 4000 times, or strong chlorine extract at 2500 times concentration for better results. Before sowing, soak seeds in fresh water for 12–24 hours, then in 300-fold diluted strong chlorine (85%) for another 12–24 hours. At the three-leaf stage and before transplanting, spray each seedling with strong chlorine extract. During the heading stage, use a mixture of 4% copper ammonium solution, 20% Yeqingshuang, and potassium permanganate mixed with salt water—this method has shown up to 80% effectiveness in controlling the disease.
