After the fruit is harvested, it's crucial to properly manage and strengthen the fruit trees. This ensures that the tree accumulates sufficient nutrients to support its growth and development in the following year, including vital processes such as bud break, leaf expansion, branching, flowering, and fruit set. Neglecting this maintenance can leave the trees vulnerable, increasing the risk of pests and diseases that may severely impact next year’s yield and fruit quality.
1. After pruning apricot trees, summer pruning should be carried out post-harvest. Remove any dry or weak branches, and trim back those that have become excessively weak or drooping. For leggy shoots growing within the canopy, implement techniques like topping or twisting to control excessive vegetative growth. Once pruning is complete, apply a disinfectant to the tree to prevent disease and frost damage, which helps reduce the breeding of overwintering pests and pathogens.
2. Pest control is essential after harvest, as the trees are often weakened and more susceptible to infestations. Based on the situation, apply a combination of fungicides and insecticides. A new high-fat membrane can also be used for protection. Additionally, spraying 1–2 times with a 500 kg solution of paclobutrazol, along with 0.3% urea or 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate, can promote healthy growth and recovery.
3. Enhancing soil fertility is another key step. Immediately after harvesting, plow the soil around the trees to a depth of 5–10 cm. Before the leaves fall, perform deeper plowing (30–40 cm) combined with the application of base fertilizer. Apply a quick-acting fertilizer right after harvest—each mature apricot tree should receive 0.5 kg of urea followed by watering. Before winter, apply a primary base fertilizer consisting mainly of well-rotted manure, with a small amount of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers added for balance.
4. Watering is also important. Before the ground freezes, water the apricot trees thoroughly to ensure they have enough moisture for the winter. The amount of water needed depends on the drought level and the age of the trees. Proper irrigation helps the trees survive the cold season and remain healthy for the next growing cycle.
In addition, apricot trees are sensitive to waterlogging. If there is standing water around the roots, it should be drained immediately to prevent root rot and other health issues. Taking these steps ensures the long-term vitality and productivity of your apricot trees.
