Sichuan word money turtle breeding technology

The Sichuan money turtle, also known as the red-sided or red-bellied turtle, has recently been successfully bred by the leading amphibian and reptile museum in Haining, Zhejiang Province. This unique species is distinguished by its reddish-brown shell with three prominent black vertical stripes that resemble the Chinese character "Chuan," which gives it the name "Chuan Zi Jin Qian Gui" (Sichuan Money Turtle). Its limbs are orange with visible toes, and it typically weighs up to around 2000 grams. This small aquatic creature is not only valued for its ornamental beauty but also for its medicinal and nutritional benefits. It has become increasingly popular among both urban and rural communities. Introducing this turtle into farming and breeding can offer new opportunities for farmers, fishermen, and laid-off workers to improve their livelihoods and find new employment. Here are some key techniques for artificial breeding: First, understanding the living habits and feeding environment is essential. The Sichuan money turtle thrives in small rivers, ponds, and marshes, where it feeds on clams, insects, shrimp, and occasionally plant matter. When the temperature drops below 17°C, it stops eating and enters hibernation. It becomes active when the temperature rises above 24°C, with peak activity between 28°C and 31°C. At this time, it consumes a large amount of food. For turtles weighing less than 200 grams, a standard goldfish tank can be used. Adding aquatic plants and pebbles will make the environment more natural and comfortable, especially if placed on a coffee table or desk. For adult turtles over 500 grams, a larger rectangular tank with a thickness of at least 5 mm and a height of 40 cm or more is recommended to prevent escape. Second, feeding and management play a crucial role in the turtle’s health. A balanced diet of animal and vegetable feed in a 3:1 ratio is ideal, fed once or twice daily. Young turtles under 100 grams should have calcium supplements added to their food to prevent bone softening. In spring and autumn, feeding at noon and changing water in the afternoon is most effective. During late autumn, care must be taken to avoid large temperature differences when changing water. At 18°C, although the turtle may eat, it should be fed less to avoid indigestion during the colder nights. Winter is a critical period for the Sichuan money turtle, as it is sensitive to temperature fluctuations. The ideal temperature for feeding is around 24°C, with 30°C being optimal. When temperatures drop below 15°C, the turtle gradually begins to hibernate. After waking from hibernation, the turtle may appear weak, but it has a strong appetite. The first feeding should be light to avoid digestive issues. As the temperature rises, the feeding amount should be gradually increased.
