Rabbit health management skills
Now is an excellent time for rabbits to grow and reproduce. However, during hot weather, harmful bacteria and parasites thrive as well. Rabbits are particularly vulnerable to poisoning and various gastrointestinal diseases. Young and baby rabbits face even greater risks. If proper management isn't in place, the mortality rate can rise significantly. Therefore, to ensure healthy rabbit farming, it's essential to strengthen daily care and implement effective health and disease prevention measures.
Clean all green feed thoroughly, removing any foreign objects like strings, plastic films, or other debris. Wash the feed, dry it properly, and then feed it to the rabbits. When cutting grass for feeding, avoid any unknown or potentially toxic plants. Never feed dirty grass, rotting or spoiled grass, or grass that has been exposed to rainwater, morning dew, or pesticides.
Feed materials should be clean, free from sand, mold, and contamination. Store feed in a dry and well-ventilated area, protecting it from moisture and rain. Avoid storing it near pesticides, fertilizers, or livestock. Any feed that has changed color or taste should be discarded immediately. Replace leftover hay regularly to maintain hygiene.
Water must always be clean and fresh. Clean the water basin daily. If the drinking water becomes contaminated with rabbit feces or feed, replace it right away. During hot summer days, you can add 1% to 2% salt to the water. This helps replenish the salt lost by the rabbits and also aids in cooling them down during heat stress. Make sure drinking utensils are kept clean at all times.
Rabbit cages should remain dry, clean, and well-ventilated. In summer, install screens and regularly spray insecticides to control mosquitoes and flies. Clean up manure daily, and use lime or ash to disinfect and keep the ground dry. During the rainy season, ensure proper drainage around the cages to prevent waterlogging and mud buildup.
Keep the feeding troughs clean and remove leftover feed promptly. Wet mixed feed should be prepared and given immediately to avoid spoilage, which can lead to illness in rabbits. By maintaining strict hygiene and proper feeding practices, you can greatly improve the health and survival rate of your rabbits.
