How to pick goslings

Picking goslings can be done through a combination of asking, observing, touching, and testing. First, ask about the source of the hatching goslings. Goslings from breeder geese that are 2 to 3 years old are typically healthier and more vigorous. In contrast, goslings from young or very old geese (over 4 years old) tend to be weaker and less resilient. It's also important to check if the parent geese have been vaccinated against gosling plague, as this greatly affects the health of the offspring. When observing the goslings, look for individuals that are large in size, with long and dense feathers, and a shiny appearance—these are signs of strong, healthy chicks. Avoid those that are small, have short or sparse feathers, or appear dull and lifeless. Choose purebred yellow geese, as they are generally more robust. Also, check for any deformities or disabilities in their eyes, legs, or other body parts. When handling the goslings, feel their bones. Strong, healthy goslings will have sturdy bones and show resistance when held. They should struggle and bounce back quickly, showing good elasticity. A weak gosling will feel soft and limp. Check the umbilical area—it should be smooth, dry, and closed. If it’s swollen, moist, or open, the gosling may be sick or weak. Finally, test their strength by placing them on their backs. A healthy gosling will quickly right itself and stand up. If it struggles or takes too long, it may be weak or unwell. These simple checks can help you select the strongest and healthiest goslings for raising.
