Foliar spray fertilizer to save time and effort

Foliar spray fertilizer, also known as foliar feeding, is an essential practice in the cultivation of fruit trees. This method is highly efficient, saving labor while delivering quick results and ensuring a high nutrient absorption rate. Up to 80% of the applied nutrients can be absorbed within 24 hours. During the flowering stage, spraying apple, pear, and hawthorn trees can boost fruit set rates. Spraying during the growing season helps fruits grow larger and increases chlorophyll content, improving overall tree health. First, it's important to choose the right type and concentration of foliar fertilizer. For nitrogen-based fertilizers, urea is commonly used at a concentration of 0.3%. Ammonium nitrate and ammonium sulfate should be applied at 0.2%. Phosphate fertilizers such as monoammonium phosphate and potassium phosphate are typically used at concentrations between 0.5% and 1%. Potassium fertilizers like potassium chloride and potassium nitrate are applied at a concentration of 1%. Second, timing is crucial. Foliar sprays should be applied from when the leaves begin to grow until they stop growing. This ensures that the tree can efficiently absorb the nutrients. Third, the application method plays a key role. The fertilizer should be dissolved in water at the correct concentration before being sprayed. It's best to spray early in the morning (between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m.) or late in the afternoon (from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.), avoiding midday when temperatures are high. Spraying during noon can cause rapid evaporation, reducing effectiveness and potentially burning leaves and fruits. When applying, focus on the underside of the leaves, as this area is less waxy and absorbs nutrients more effectively. A foliar spray should be done every 10 to 15 days, and it can be combined with pesticide applications for efficiency. The choice of fertilizer depends on the tree’s nutritional needs and fruit development stage. Trees that produce many fruits throughout the year require more nutrients, so nitrogen-based fertilizers can be used to replenish them. This not only enhances flower production for the next season but also improves fruit quality and yield. For young trees or those without fruiting in a given year, applying phosphate and potassium fertilizers helps promote flower bud formation, leading to earlier fruiting and higher yields.
