Citrons use buds to grow buds quickly and well
The cultivation of toona sinensis buds using camphor branches in winter is an efficient and profitable method, offering a short production cycle, low initial investment, simple management, and high returns. This technique is particularly well-suited for small-scale family farming using courtyard spaces. Last year, the author conducted an experiment using a 1.58-meter mini greenhouse and successfully harvested 10 kilograms of shoots in just 50 days. Selling them at 120 yuan per kilogram in the Xingtai market resulted in a net profit of 1,000 yuan. Here are the detailed steps for cultivating camphor buds:
1. **Selecting Cutting Branches**
After the leaves of the scented banyan tree have fallen, choose twigs with a diameter of 2-3 cm. Cut them into pieces approximately 25 cm long and bundle them together, usually around 810 pieces per bundle.
2. **Choosing Containers**
You can use various containers such as old cans, shallow ceramic pots, or plastic pots. Alternatively, wooden boards can be used to create custom wooden boxes that are 25 cm wide and can be extended as needed. These boxes should be lined with a soft plastic film to prevent water leakage.
3. **Preparing the Nutrient Solution**
Since the cut branches themselves contain limited nutrients, it's essential to provide additional nutrition to maximize yield. The nutrient solution is made by mixing 0.05% foliar fertilizer (boiled) and 0.5% rare earth fertilizer into clean water.
4. **Management Practices**
Pour the prepared nutrient solution into the container, filling it up to two-thirds of its volume. Insert the bundled shoots into the container with the buds facing upward, then move the setup into the greenhouse. In the first month, add more nutrient solution every 4 to 6 days, and after that, every 2 to 3 days. Maintain the temperature inside the greenhouse between 20-25°C during the day and 9-15°C at night. After about 20 days, the branches will begin to sprout, and you can start harvesting the buds within 25 to 30 days.
This method not only provides a steady income but also makes good use of available space and resources, making it an ideal choice for home gardeners and small-scale farmers looking to diversify their crops.
