Red bean sprout cultivation

First, prepare the growing area in a dark or shaded indoor space, or under a sheltered location. Construct cultivation troughs that are 100 to 120 cm wide and 20 cm deep. Line the bottom of the troughs with a plastic sheet, and make small holes in it to allow for proper drainage. Use a mix of substrates such as perlite, river sand, or other suitable materials to provide a well-draining base for the seeds.

Second, select high-quality seeds that are plump, bright in color, and have a white umbilical area. Ensure the germination rate is over 95% and choose fresh seeds. Remove any broken, damaged, or insect-infested beans, as well as any impurities. Rinse the seeds thoroughly with clean water to remove dirt and mucus before proceeding.

Third, soak the seeds in clean water at around 20°C for 16 to 24 hours. Change the water four times during this period to prevent fermentation. After soaking, wash the seeds again to remove any remaining mucus or debris. Then wrap them in a damp cloth and keep them in a warm place until the seeds begin to sprout and show a white tip.

Fourth, prepare the substrate by filling the troughs with a 10 cm layer of the chosen medium. Water the substrate lightly from the bottom to ensure even moisture. Sow the seeds evenly at a rate of about 2 kg per square meter, then cover them with a 0.5 cm layer of the same substrate. Use a fine spray bottle to mist the surface and cover the tray with a plastic film. Avoid watering again until the sprouts emerge. After two days, the red bean sprouts will appear, and you can carefully remove the plastic film.

Fifth, maintain a consistent temperature between 16°C and 30°C throughout the growing period. Water the sprouts 2 to 3 times daily, making sure to water thoroughly without causing waterlogging. Keep the environment well-ventilated to promote healthy growth and prevent disease.

Sixth, harvest the sprouts when they reach a height of about 15 cm, and before the first pair of true leaves fully open. At this stage, the sprouts should be tender and not fibrous. Cut them just above the base of the stem to ensure a clean and fresh harvest.

This method ensures optimal conditions for red bean sprout cultivation, resulting in high-quality, nutritious sprouts that are ready for consumption within a short time frame. By following these steps carefully, growers can achieve consistent and successful results every time.
