Control method of Spodoptera litura

Spodoptera litura, commonly known as the tobacco cutworm or the armyworm, is a species of moth belonging to the family Noctuidae. This pest is widely distributed across China and is considered a voracious feeder, causing significant damage to various crops. It is particularly prevalent in provinces such as Henan, Hebei, and Shandong, as well as in the Yangtze River basin regions including Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Anhui, and the Yellow River basin areas. As a polyphagous insect, Spodoptera litura can feed on over 290 different plant species, making it a serious threat to agricultural production. Its feeding habits cause extensive damage, especially during its larval stages. Newly hatched larvae typically feed on the upper surface of leaves, leaving only the epidermis and veins behind, which results in a translucent, screen-like appearance of the damaged leaves. As they grow, especially after the third instar, the larvae begin to consume larger portions of the leaves, creating irregular holes and sometimes even stripping entire plants. In severe infestations, the young stems may also be eaten. The larvae are capable of migrating in groups when their food source is depleted, spreading to neighboring fields and causing further damage. This behavior makes early detection and control essential for effective management. In terms of control methods, biological options include the use of bacterial insecticides such as Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) emulsions or liquid formulations like strain No.6 of Bacillus spp., typically diluted between 500 to 800 times. For chemical control, options include using phoxim 50% EC at a 1000-fold dilution, deltamethrin 2.5% EC at a 3000-fold dilution, or 21% cypermethrin EC at a 4000-fold dilution. Integrated pest management strategies that combine both biological and chemical approaches are often recommended to reduce resistance development and environmental impact.
