Red bean sprout cultivation
In order to begin the cultivation process, it's important to prepare a suitable growing environment. Choose a dark, shaded indoor area or a protected space where temperature and humidity can be controlled. Construct rectangular planting troughs that are approximately 100–120 cm wide and 20 cm deep. Line the bottom of the trough with a plastic sheet, and make small holes in the film to allow excess water to drain away. For the growing medium, use materials such as perlite, river sand, or other lightweight substrates that promote good drainage and aeration.
Next, select high-quality seeds. Look for seeds that are plump, bright in color, and have a white umbilical area. Ensure that the germination rate is over 95%, and avoid any damaged, broken, or insect-infested seeds. Wash the seeds thoroughly under running water to remove dirt and debris before proceeding.
For the germination stage, soak the seeds in clean, lukewarm water (around 20°C) for 16–24 hours. Change the water every few hours to prevent fermentation. After soaking, rinse the seeds again to remove any mucus or residue. Place them in a damp cloth or a germination tray and keep them in a warm, dark place until the seeds start to sprout and show a white tip.
Once the seeds have sprouted, prepare the substrate by filling the planting troughs with a layer of about 10 cm. Water the substrate from the bottom to ensure even moisture without over-saturating it. Sow the sprouted seeds at a rate of about 2 kg per square meter, then cover them with a thin layer of substrate, approximately 0.5 cm thick. Use a fine spray bottle to mist the surface gently, and then cover the tray with a plastic film to maintain humidity. Avoid watering directly until the sprouts emerge from the soil.
After two days, the red bean sprouts should begin to appear. At this point, carefully remove the plastic film to allow the sprouts to receive light and air. Maintain a consistent temperature between 16°C and 30°C throughout the growing period. Water the plants 2–3 times daily, ensuring thorough but not excessive moisture. Make sure there is no standing water, and keep the area well-ventilated to prevent mold or disease.
Harvest the sprouts when they reach a height of about 15 cm, and before the first pair of true leaves fully unfold. The stems should still be soft and tender, with no signs of fibrosis. Cut the sprouts just above the base using a sharp knife or scissors. This ensures a clean harvest and allows for potential regrowth if desired.
By following these steps, you can successfully grow healthy red bean sprouts in a controlled environment, ensuring optimal growth and quality.
