Ferment bed operation precautions
Here are the key operational precautions for using a Golden Baby fermentation bed:
1. **Bacterial Dosage**: For a pigsty housing around 15 pigs, use 2 kg of Jinbao fermentation aid. Start by spreading 1.6 kg initially, and add the remaining amount gradually. The sty area should be at least 10 square meters. Overcrowding can lead to excessive waste accumulation, which may stop the fermentation process.
2. **Dilution Method**: Mix the fermentation aid with rice bran, corn flour, or wheat bran in a ratio of 1:5 or more. Fresh rice bran provides better nutrients than old bran. If available, you can also spray a 5% brown sugar water solution onto the mixture to enhance microbial activity.
3. **Sawdust Amount**: For an area of 20 square meters, the litter depth should be at least 50 cm, requiring approximately 10 cubic meters of sawdust. Too thin will prevent proper fermentation, while too thick may cause overheating. Spread the fermentation aid evenly throughout the litter, either all at once or in layers. Dry old sawdust or fresh sawdust is ideal, and UV treatment can help sterilize it, reducing skin irritation risks. If the bedding becomes too dry and affects pig respiration, lightly mist the surface with water or brown sugar water. Normally, no additional moisture should be added, as waste from the pigs will naturally maintain the right humidity over time.
4. **Alternative Litter Materials**: Sawdust is the best option, but if unavailable, rice husks or straw can be used as alternatives. However, the top 20 cm should still be covered with sawdust. Rice husks need to be broken, and straw should be cut into pieces shorter than 0.5 cm or crushed, but not overly fine.
5. **Humidity Control**: Keep the litter moist but not overly wet. If the litter is too dry, it can create dust that irritates the pigs' respiratory system. In such cases, spray a small amount of water on the surface. After pigs urinate, the maximum moisture level should not exceed 65%. Ensure that rainwater or groundwater does not enter the bed. The standard sty area should be at least 20 square meters (adjust based on the number of animals), and areas smaller than 10 square meters are not recommended for this type of fermentation bed.
