What should I do if tomatoes get ulcers?
The farmers from Zouping reached out, saying that their tomato plants are suffering from a disease known as "ulcer disease." They're asking what they should do to address this issue.
Tomato canker, also referred to as ulcer disease, is a common bacterial infection that affects the leaves, stems, and fruits of tomato plants. The symptoms typically begin with the leaves curling and appearing dehydrated, while some plants show one-sided wilting. On the stems, the inner tissue turns brown and starts to rot. When the stem is wet, a white discharge may appear, especially around the adventitious roots. The most distinctive symptom is the formation of small, sunken spots on the fruit that resemble "bird's eyes," which is why the disease is sometimes called "bird eye disease." In later stages, the fruit flesh begins to rot, allowing bacteria to spread to the seeds. Young fruits may shrink and stop growing altogether.
To manage this disease, it's important to act quickly. One effective treatment is to apply streptomycin solution during the early growth stage. Farmers can mix 15 kg of water with streptomycin, following the recommended dosage. In the early stages of infection, spraying the plants with 72% Streptomycin WP at a dilution of 400 times or using a bacterial spray at 600 times dilution can help prevent further damage. It’s also crucial to maintain good field hygiene, avoid overwatering, and ensure proper air circulation to reduce humidity, which helps in controlling the spread of the disease.
If left untreated, the disease can lead to significant yield loss, so prompt action is essential. Regular monitoring and early intervention are key to keeping the crop healthy and productive.
