What should I do if tomatoes get ulcers?
Farmers from Zouping called in and mentioned that their tomato plants are suffering from a disease known as "ulcer disease." They’re asking what they should do.
Tomato canker, also known as ulcer disease, is a common bacterial infection that affects the leaves, stems, and fruits of tomato plants. The symptoms usually start on the leaves, which may curl up and look like they're dehydrated. In some cases, one side of the plant may wilt or appear damaged. On the stems, the inner tissue turns brown and starts to rot, and when the stem gets wet, a white pus-like substance may ooze out from the affected areas. The fruit often develops small, sunken spots that resemble bird's eyes, which is why this disease is sometimes called "bird eye disease." As the infection progresses, the fruit flesh may rot, and the seeds can become infected. Young fruits may also shrink and stop growing.
To control the disease, farmers can use streptomycin-based solutions. A common treatment is to mix 15 kg of water with streptomycin and apply it during the early stages of infection. For spraying, a 72% Streptomycin WP solution diluted to 400 times or a 600 times dilution of bacterial agent can be used. These treatments are effective at preventing further damage and controlling the spread of the disease. It’s important to act quickly once symptoms are noticed to minimize crop loss. Regular monitoring and proper sanitation practices, such as removing infected plants and avoiding overwatering, can also help reduce the risk of future outbreaks.
