The best time and method for sesame dressing

In order to achieve high-quality and high-yield sesame, it's not enough to just use good seed varieties. Proper top-dressing is also essential, and the timing and method of application must be carefully managed. During the seedling stage, applying too much nitrogen can lead to overly vigorous growth, resulting in tall, weak seedlings. Therefore, sesame seedlings usually only receive a portion of nitrogen fertilizer as a base fertilizer. Farmers often say, "Apply fertilizer when you see the seedlings." If the seedlings are weak or show uneven growth, a small amount of diluted human manure or urea can be used as a top-up. Since the root system is shallow at this stage, fertilizers should be applied as shallowly as possible to ensure efficient absorption. The bud stage is a critical period for flower bud differentiation, during which both vegetative and reproductive growth occur simultaneously. This is the most effective time for top-dressing. Nitrogen fertilizer should be the main component, with phosphorus and potassium added as supplements. In areas where boron deficiency is common, boron fertilizer should also be applied. During the flowering stage, sesame grows rapidly, and about 70%-80% of the nutrients needed for the entire growth cycle are absorbed during this time. To support vigorous growth, increase photosynthetic product accumulation, boost calyx numbers, prevent premature aging, and ensure full, plump grains, additional fertilization is necessary. At this point, lateral roots begin to develop, enhancing the root system’s ability to absorb nutrients. The plants grow faster, and their nutrient demands rise significantly. Chemical fertilizers are convenient to use, but decomposed cake fertilizer, manure, or compost can also be effective. The recommended methods for fertilizing during these stages include applying fertilizer about 10 cm away from the seedlings, in a 10 cm deep layer of soil to reach the roots, and then covering it with soil. Studies have shown that shallow application (10-13 cm) can increase yield by approximately 11% compared to deep application (25 cm). When sowing, cooked cake fertilizer or granular urea can be mixed with soil before loosening the field. If the weather is dry, watering after application helps maximize fertilizer effectiveness. From the beginning of flowering to full bloom, foliar fertilization can also be used. The method involves spraying the leaves with 0.3%-0.4% potassium dihydrogen phosphate in the afternoon on sunny days, three times with an interval of 5-6 days. It's important to water the plants after spraying to ensure optimal results.
