Lotus Field Management
Lawn top dressing should be applied 2 to 3 times during the growing season. The first application should take place when the plant has 1-2 leaves, the second before the rhizome starts to form, and the third when the final leaf appears. For every 667 square meters (one mu), apply 2000-4000 kg of manure or 15 kg of urea for the first round. The second round requires 20-25 kg of compound fertilizer, and the third round uses 10-15 kg of urea. Early maturing varieties may only need two applications.
Weeding should be done regularly throughout the growth period. When the lotus plants have 1-2 leaves, you can manually fertilize or loosen the soil around the rhizomes to promote the development of the rhizome shoots. Be careful not to damage the stems while loosening the soil.
To ensure even distribution of the rhizome shoots in the field and avoid them growing into the ridges, it’s important to check their direction frequently. Use a hoe to inspect the growth direction and move the shoots toward the desired area. When adjusting, carefully open the soil in the first and second sections of the rhizome, expose the bud head and the rhizome shoot, then gently lift and reposition it before burying it back into the soil. Avoid pulling too hard to prevent breaking the rhizome. It's best to perform this task on a sunny afternoon.
Water level management is crucial. The water depth should be kept consistent, following the principle of shallow in the early stage, deeper in the middle, and gradually reduced later. During the mid-growth phase, when temperatures are high and the stems are tall, the water depth can go up to more than 20 cm. After the harvest, if the rhizomes are to be left for the next season, maintain a certain water level to prevent the soil from drying out and cracking, which could damage the underground stems during cold winters. This also helps keep the soil from becoming too hard, making future excavation easier.
