Liao Schisandra Technical Information
Schisandra, commonly known as North Schisandra, is also referred to as Liaowuwei or Shanzha. It is primarily cultivated in the northeastern region of China, as well as in provinces such as Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Ningxia, and Shandong. This versatile plant serves both medicinal and culinary purposes, making it a valuable economic crop. The fruit is sour and warm in nature, widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has stimulating effects on the central nervous system and respiratory system, enhancing vision and hearing, while also regulating heart function, liver health, and blood pressure. Additionally, Schisandra can be processed into various health products like syrup, wine, and condiments, further increasing its market value.
Ecologically, Schisandra chinensis is a deciduous woody vine belonging to the Magnoliaceae family. It grows by winding around other plants, reaching up to 15 meters in length. Its root system consists of dense fibrous roots that are typically found in shallow soil layers. The plant has alternate leaves with a heart-shaped base and toothed edges, and the fruits are small, dark red berries containing one or two seeds. The fruit is sweet and sour, while the seeds have a bitter and spicy taste, contributing to its name.
In terms of growth habits, Schisandra prefers moist, humus-rich, or loose, fertile soils. It is highly cold-resistant, capable of withstanding temperatures as low as -21°C. Seedlings require a humid environment during the early stages, while mature plants need good light and ventilation for flowering and fruiting. Flowering occurs from late May to early June, with male flowers opening first and female flowers following later. Due to limited insect activity, Schisandra relies mainly on wind pollination. It typically begins bearing fruit after 3-5 years, with peak yields occurring between 6-9 years.
For seedling cultivation, selecting high-quality seeds is crucial. Seeds should be collected in mid-to-late September, dried in the shade, and then stratified in a mix of sand and water. After winter treatment, they are sown in spring or autumn, depending on the region. Proper nursery preparation, including plowing and adding compost, ensures healthy growth. During the seedling stage, regular watering, weeding, and shading help prevent diseases and promote development.
When transplanting, the planting site should be well-drained and rich in organic matter. The planting density is usually around 1100-1200 plants per acre, arranged in rows spaced 120 cm apart. Careful handling of seedlings, proper watering, and timely fertilization are essential for successful establishment. Field management includes irrigation, fertilization, pruning, and pest control to maintain plant health and productivity.
Disease and pest control measures are vital for sustainable production. Common issues include powdery mildew, leaf blight, and pests like the black velvet turtle and roller leaf insect. Preventive sprays and careful monitoring help manage these threats. Pesticide drift, especially from herbicides like 2,4-D-butyl ester, can cause severe damage, so isolation from sensitive crops is necessary.
Harvesting occurs in mid-to-late September when the fruits are fully mature. Manual collection and drying are preferred to minimize losses. Fruits are dried on sandy soil or cement floors, turned regularly, and then finished in a controlled environment at lower temperatures to ensure quality. Proper post-harvest handling is critical for maintaining the medicinal and commercial value of Schisandra.
