(1) Disinfection of storage pits (garages) and packaging materials: Before storing muskmelons, it's essential to properly disinfect the storage area and the packaging materials. Place the packaging materials in a designated storage warehouse and apply the sulfur-smoke method. Use approximately 3 kilograms of sulfur per 100 cubic meters, mixing it with sawdust for better combustion. Light the mixture and smoke the area for two days, then close the doors and windows to allow the fumes to work effectively. Afterward, open all doors and windows to ventilate thoroughly. Alternatively, you can use a 2% formalin solution to spray and disinfect the surfaces, which is an effective and safer option for some operations.
(2) Stacking and hanging of muskmelons: After harvesting and sorting the melons, place them into fruit boxes and move them into the storage facility. Stack the boxes in a stable manner to prevent damage. It’s important to place trays or other supportive materials at the bottom of the fruit boxes to ensure even weight distribution. Maintain proper spacing between stacks, as well as between the stacks and the walls, and the ceiling, to allow for adequate air circulation. Typically, 100 to 150 kg of muskmelons can be stored per cubic meter. Store varieties with high storage resistance and those that are late-ripening in the inner part of the warehouse, while placing less durable types near the entrance for easier access and management during outbound operations.
(3) Temperature control: At the beginning of storage, the melons brought in from the field may still carry residual heat, causing the cellar temperature to rise. This increases the respiration rate of the fruits. To manage this, use ventilation systems to introduce cooler outside air and lower both the cellar and fruit temperatures. During winter, when temperatures drop, the focus shifts to insulation and frost protection. Be cautious about cold air entering the storage pit, as it can cause damage to the fruits. Ventilate the cellar during the day when the temperature is highest, but keep the duration short and limit the number of ventilation sessions compared to the autumn season.
As spring approaches, temperatures and soil temperatures rise quickly. At this stage, the main concern is preventing the cellar temperature from increasing too much. During the day, when the outside air is warmer, close all doors, windows, and vents to maintain a stable internal environment. At night, when the outside temperature drops below the cellar temperature, open the doors and vents to allow fresh air to circulate. Keeping the cellar temperature as low as possible for an extended period helps prolong the storage life of the melons. However, low humidity can lead to natural moisture loss, and severe dehydration may reduce the quality and market value of the fruits. Due to regular ventilation, the humidity inside the storage area may decrease. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain appropriate humidity levels, ideally keeping the relative humidity between 80% and 90%.
