Kiwi Fertilization Technology
Kiwifruit is a highly nutritious fruit, containing significantly higher levels of vitamins compared to common fruits like apples and pears—often dozens to hundreds of times more. In addition to its rich vitamin content, kiwifruit is also packed with 14 essential minerals, making it one of the most valuable health foods globally.
This fruit thrives in a wide range of temperatures and soil types, but it has specific requirements. It prefers moist soil and is not drought-resistant, so consistent water supply is crucial. Kiwifruit plants are sensitive to direct sunlight and prefer partial shade, which helps prevent leaf burn. During their growth cycle, especially after entering the fruiting stage, they require large amounts of inorganic nutrients. If these nutrients are lacking in the soil, the plant’s development, yield, and overall health can be negatively affected.
The nutrient needs of kiwifruit vary depending on the growth stage. For instance, during the Spring period from sprouting to fruiting, more than 80% of nitrogen, potassium, and zinc accumulate in the leaves. Potassium demand is particularly high during this time. As the plant grows and produces fruit, it requires careful management of nutrient intake to ensure optimal performance.
Due to its high yield potential, kiwifruit requires significant amounts of fertilizer throughout the year. A typical fertilization schedule includes three to four applications:
1. **Base Fertilizer**: Apply organic fertilizer along with 1.5 to 2 kg of phosphate fertilizer per plant to provide a solid foundation for growth.
2. **Early Spring Topdressing**: Apply 0.8 to 1 kg of potassium nitrate per plant before bud break to support early development.
3. **Fruit Protection Topdressing**: After flowering, apply 1.5 to 2 kg of potassium phosphate nitrate per plant around 6 to 8 months later to enhance fruit quality and size.
4. **Foliar Spray**: During fruit enlargement, spray 0.2% potassium dihydrogen phosphate two to three times to improve fruit development and nutritional value.
By following a well-balanced fertilization strategy, growers can maximize both the yield and quality of their kiwifruit crops.
