How to raise meat goose in summer
During the hot summer season, meat geese and ducks often experience rapid breathing, reduced appetite, and constant annoyance from mosquitoes and flies, all of which negatively impact their growth. To ensure healthy development, it is essential to improve feeding and management practices.
One of the most critical concerns during summer is preventing heatstroke. The temperature inside the goose house should not exceed 26°C, and the stocking density for meat geese should be maintained at 6-7 per square meter. Effective cooling methods include ensuring good ventilation, sprinkling a 1 cm layer of fine sand on the floor, setting up shade structures or netting about 2 meters above the birds, planting vines like grapes or pumpkins around the area, and spraying cold water or mist on the ground or directly on the geese when temperatures are extremely high. Painting the exterior walls with white lime or whitewash and covering the roof with reflective materials can also help reduce heat absorption.
For goslings, maintaining a controlled environment is crucial. Newly hatched goslings have weak thermoregulation abilities, so they need careful temperature control. In the first week, the temperature should be kept between 30°C and 28°C, decreasing by 2°C weekly until reaching 16°C. Humidity should be managed carefully—55%-60% in the first week and 60%-65% afterward. Breeding density starts at 25 goslings per square meter, decreasing by 5-10 each week. Separating strong, weak, large, small, and sick goslings ensures even growth.
Feeding should begin 24 hours after hatching. A plastic sheet should be placed on the floor, slightly warmed, and a small amount of warm boiled water mixed with glucose or vitamins should be sprayed. This helps clean their digestive systems and encourages them to eat. After that, feed rice that has been washed and cut into small pieces, along with finely chopped green vegetables, allowing free access. Gently tapping the ground can encourage them to start eating. By day three, formula feed can be introduced, with a protein content of 20%-22% and energy of 2700-2800 kcal/kg.
Grazing can begin after two weeks of age. Choose sunny, windless days, and let them graze on nearby grasslands for about an hour, gradually increasing time as they grow. From 30 days old, when main wing feathers start to develop, geese enter a phase of bone, muscle, and feather growth. Use early morning and late summer cool periods for grazing, and supplement with grains like bran, rice, and corn 2-3 times daily.
Fattening begins once the main wings are fully grown. Keep geese confined and provide a balanced diet rich in carbohydrates such as corn, rice, and wheat, supplemented with protein and roughage. Crush the feed, mix with water, and offer 4-5 times daily, including one nighttime feeding. Allow unlimited access to food and water. Clean the housing daily, disinfect feeding equipment every 3-5 days using lime water, and sterilize the area with bleach or caustic soda every 7-10 days.
Disease prevention is vital. Goslings are highly susceptible to diseases in summer, especially if not vaccinated. Administer anti-goose sera to newly hatched goslings to prevent plague. Also, monitor for flu and paratyphoid, and maintain strict hygiene to ensure a disease-free environment.
