Coreopsis flower seeds harvesting preservation
Coreopsis, commonly known as tickseed, is an annual herb belonging to the Compositae family. Native to the United States, it typically grows to a height of 40 to 50 cm. The plant produces achenes within its flower heads, which are black in color and lack a pappus. These seeds mature between August and October.
For seed harvesting, the capitulum (flower head) is the primary part collected. Harvesting usually takes place from August to October, during which the most mature inflorescences are cut, dried, and stored in a dry and cool environment. After drying, the seeds are cleaned, sorted, and mixed to ensure uniformity.
In terms of grading, the harvested seeds must be inspected for species purity, appropriate moisture levels, and absence of contaminants. The first-grade seeds should have a germination rate of at least 98%, second-grade seeds at least 95%, and third-grade seeds at least 92%. A small percentage (up to 5%) below the standard is acceptable for each grade, especially if the seeds are stored for longer periods. As storage time increases, the germination rate standards may need to be adjusted accordingly.
Packaging involves using moisture-proof paper bags for internal packaging and printed paper bags for external use. It's important to avoid mixing different seed grades during the process. For wholesale, the packaging size ranges from 300 to 500 grams, while retail packages are typically 0.1 to 0.2 grams per unit.
Storage conditions should be dry, dark, well-ventilated, and maintained at a temperature between 10°C and 15°C. When properly stored under these conditions, Coreopsis seeds can retain a high germination rate for up to 1 to 2 years.
In gardening, Coreopsis is valued for its vibrant golden flowers and green foliage, making it suitable for various planting environments, including borders and rock gardens.
For supply purposes, sowing is recommended between March and April. Seeds should be ordered in advance to ensure availability. To maintain quality, unsealed seeds should be stored during off-seasons. If seeds have been stored for over one year, clear instructions should be provided before delivery to inform users about potential changes in viability.
