Scientists at the Australian Federal Institute of Science and Industry have said that the bat's immune system may be the mystery of humanity against the Ebola virus.
The origin of the Ebola virus is not yet fully established, but most scientists believe that African fruit bats may be one of its origins.
Dr. Michel Baker of the Commonwealth Institute of Science and Industry (CSIRO) said that the bats carry a large amount of Ebola virus, but they do not have symptoms of illness because they can be in the virus. Dr. Baker said that the human problem is that the human body activates the immune system after the virus has been violated, but it was too late, and the damage caused by Ebola was too serious and the immune system could not resist.
Another problem, she said, is that bats can tolerate the overloading of their immune system, but humans cannot. Once the immune system is highly reactive against the virus, this brings harm to the human body beyond the benefits. In fact, symptoms of fever, in vivo or extracorporeal bleeding in patients with Ebola are the result of an immune system overreaction.
Dr. Baker said that although it is now known that bats can resist the Ebola virus, there is still a long way to go to make the human immune system work as high as a bat without any side effects.
Scientists now believe that the Ebola virus is transmitted to primates through African fruit bats and then transmitted to humans, because many places in West Africa rely on hunting primates for a living.
