3D printing medical application market exceeds 10 billion policy support

A special operation is underway at the orthopedic clinic of the Ninth People's Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine.

This is a patient with a pelvic tumor. After the diagnosis, most of the pelvis is removed and the risk of disability is faced. The doctor is trying to get him to stand up again.

According to the previous method, the commonly used "universal" metal products or treated allogeneic bones are generally used to repair huge bone defects, but the matching degree is poor and the effect is not good.

Prof. Dai Kejun, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and director of the orthopaedic department of the hospital, introduced a complete pelvic model identical to the patient through a 3D printing device.

The surgeon first performed simulated resection on the model, and designed and manufactured the artificial semi-pelvic prosthesis according to the defect of the model and simulated installation and correction on the model. After the simulation was successfully installed, the real pelvic prosthesis was printed using titanium alloy. . After surgical removal of the tumor, the prosthesis is implanted and precisely attached to the residual pelvis.

The application market will exceed 10 billion

According to a report released last week by 3D printing top consultancy Wohlers, the 3D printing market in 2012 (including all products and services worldwide) grew at an average annual rate of 28.6% (composite annual growth rate), with a total output value of $2,204 million. The average annual growth rate for the three years (2010-2012) was 27.4%. In 2019, the 3D printing market will reach $6 billion. In the medical application market share accounted for 15.1%, ranking third. Analysts at LuxResearch predict that 3D printing technology will be rapidly adopted in the medical industry , predicting that the market will reach $1.9 billion in 2025, equivalent to more than 10 billion yuan.

At present, the application of 3D printing technology in the medical industry mainly includes the following aspects: First, medical devices that do not need to remain in the body, including medical models, medical instruments, rehabilitation aids, prostheses, hearing aids, dental, surgical guides, etc.; Permanent implants, using titanium alloys, cobalt-chromium-molybdenum alloys, bioceramics, and high molecular polymers, through 3D printing of bone, cartilage, joints, teeth and other products, surgically implanted into the human body; third is 3D bioprinting, that is, use "Bio-ink" containing cells and growth factors, combined with other layers of materials to print out the product, in vitro and in vivo to form a physiologically functional tissue structure. After the success of this technology, it is expected to solve the problem of transplant tissue or organ deficiency in the world.

Stratasys is a global leader in 3D printing, specializing in the production of multiple series of 3D printers and printing materials for prototyping and direct manufacturing, and recently released the world's first color multi-material 3D printer.

Wang Xiangyu, general manager of the company's Greater China region, said that Stratasys' 3D printing business has grown rapidly in recent years, and non-GAAP (non-accounting standards) total revenue in the fourth quarter of 2013 increased by 61.6% compared with 2012. Now the company has seen the application advantages of the 3D printing medical industry and the future growth trend, and has increased investment to further develop the application of this technology in the medical industry.

Mike Renard, executive vice president of Organovo, USA, said that human liver tissue cultured using 3D printing technology has been used for toxicology prediction and disease modeling. The first official commercial release plan will be carried out at the end of 2014, when it will provide the first A sample of human liver tissue they cultivated to expand the technology.
