Donated donkeys are herbivores that thrive on roughage, showing strong adaptability, disease resistance, and ease of management. They grow quickly and can be raised both in the wild and in captivity, making them ideal for rural farming. These animals have a wide range of feed sources, and even when grass is scarce, they can easily consume straw, food processing by-products, and other available plant materials.
Donkey meat is known for its tender and delicious flavor, often referred to as "sky dragon meat" and "underground donkey meat," which makes it highly popular among consumers. In recent years, the demand for donkey meat in China has been rising, with export prospects looking promising. A single donkey can be sold for between 1,500 to 2,000 yuan, and when processed into canned donkey meat, sauce donkey, or steamed donkey dishes, its value can increase two to three times. Additionally, donkey skin is widely used in traditional Chinese medicine and various industrial applications, leading to a persistent market shortage.
China is home to several high-quality donkey breeds, such as the Shandong Dezhou donkey, Shaanxi Guanzhong donkey, Henan Biyang donkey, Shanxi Guangling donkey, and others, which are well-regarded for their quality and performance. In mountainous and hilly regions, donkeys serve as essential helpers for short-distance transportation, plowing, and milling tasks. Compared to raising pigs, cattle, or sheep, meat donkey farming involves lower risk, less investment, and quicker returns, offering higher profitability.
The breeding techniques for meat donkeys include careful feeding, proper housing, selective breeding, and effective disease prevention. Donkeys prefer dried, hard, and brittle crop straws like corn, rice, and bean vines, which should be cut into 3–4 cm pieces for easy consumption. Avoiding half-dry or constantly foraged grass helps prevent digestive issues. Feed should be provided in the morning, midnight, and evening, with the main meal given at night. Mixing high-protein forages like alfalfa and legumes with straw can improve appetite.
In intensive breeding systems, shelters should protect donkeys from rain and wind, with enough space for each animal. Food troughs must be available, and adult donkeys should be kept separate to avoid aggression. Breeding programs focus on selecting large, healthy, and disease-resistant donkeys with good reproductive traits. Crossbreeding with horses and using artificial insemination can help improve breed quality and promote large-scale production.
Although donkeys are generally hardy, they are still susceptible to diseases like infectious anemia, epistaxis, snoring, and tetanus. Under intensive conditions, strict hygiene and preventive measures are essential to ensure their health and productivity. With proper care and management, raising meat donkeys can be a profitable and sustainable agricultural option.
