Bayer's new generation of free-adjustable blood glucose meter

Release date: 2009-04-22

A new free-coded blood glucose meter, the Contour TS, is set to launch in Shanghai. This marks a significant step for Bayer Diabetes Care following the introduction of its leading meters, Bai An Jie and Bai An Yi, back in 2006. The Contour TS features code-free technology, offering improved accuracy, better resistance to interference, and broader usability—making it an ideal choice for hospital settings. It reflects Bayer’s “Simplify and Win” strategy, aimed at making diabetes management easier and more effective for patients and healthcare professionals alike.

During the event, Professor Ji Qiuhe, a senior endocrinologist from Xijing Hospital, highlighted common factors that affect the reliability of blood glucose monitoring. These include user error, incorrect code entry, improper blood sampling, unclean devices, and issues with test strips. Additionally, variations in hematocrit levels and the presence of other sugars in the blood can also impact results. Among these, code-related errors are particularly common, especially among older patients who may forget to update the code or enter it incorrectly.

According to studies, 16% of users make mistakes when entering codes, which can lead to mismatched test strips and inaccurate readings. Such errors can result in a median deviation of up to 43% in blood glucose measurements, potentially missing critical hypoglycemic events. With the Contour TS, however, the device automatically calibrates when a new batch of test strips is used, eliminating the need for manual code entry and reducing the risk of human error.

Traditional glucose monitoring systems often face interference from substances like maltose, galactose, and xylose, which can react with the testing process. The new Contour TS uses the FAD dehydrogenase system, which effectively minimizes cross-reactions caused by the PQQ dehydrogenase system. This advancement significantly improves measurement accuracy and enhances the safety of treatment decisions in clinical settings.

Mr. Shi Wei, General Manager of Bayer Diabetes Health Greater China, emphasized that this new meter not only delivers high performance in terms of accuracy, ease of use, and speed but also offers an affordable solution for Chinese diabetic patients.

Given the critical role of accurate glucose monitoring, the importance of reliable and user-friendly devices cannot be overstated. As Mr. Ke Longzhi, Vice President of Bayer Diabetes Health Asia, stated during the event: “In 2009, ‘Simplify and Win’ will serve as our global brand positioning and strategic focus for the year. By introducing innovative products and exceptional customer service, we aim to simplify life for people living with diabetes, helping them manage their condition more effectively and regain control of their health.”
