Feeding fish to feed fish
Leeches, which refer to two major groups of zooplankton such as larvae and copepods, are highly nutritious and easy to digest. These organisms serve as excellent feed for fry and fingerlings. Cultivating leeches artificially is a cost-effective way to feed fish, promoting fast growth and improving yield. The process involves the following steps:
First, construct a pond. Both earthen ponds and cement pools can be used. The depth should be around 1 meter, and the size should be between 10 to 30 square meters.
Second, fill the pond with water to a depth of about 50 cm. Leeches thrive in water with a temperature range of 18-25°C, a pH of 7.5-8, and dissolved oxygen saturation between 70-120%.
Third, fertilize the pond. For each cubic meter of water, add 4 kg of cow or horse manure, or other animal waste, along with 1.5 kg of rice straw or wheat straw as base fertilizer. Apply top dressing after 10 days using the same amount as the base fertilizer. Adjust the top dressing based on water color to maintain a brownish tint. In cement pools, apply 1.5 kg of manure and 1.5-2 kg of geotextile per cubic meter. Then, apply top dressing every 8 days at a rate of 0.75 kg of manure per cubic meter.
Fourth, cultivate the leeches. Whether in an earthen or mud pond, a mixed culture method using yeast and inorganic fertilizer is effective. Add 20 grams of yeast per cubic meter of water, after soaking it in water for 3-4 hours. Also, apply 65 grams of ammonium carbonate and 37.5 grams of ammonium nitrate per cubic meter. Every five days, apply half the initial dose of yeast. After introducing the yeast, let the water sit for 1-3 days before adding fish seedlings at a rate of 30-50 grams per cubic meter.
Fifth, harvest the leeches. After 15-20 days, the leech population will have grown significantly throughout the pond. At this stage, you can begin feeding the fish in batches. It is common to collect them once every 1-2 days, taking 10-20% of the total biomass. In a water temperature range of 18-20°C, fishing can be done continuously for optimal results.
