After the pigs were grazed, the estrus not only affected the pig farmers' ability to improve the fattening and slaughter rates, but also led to feed wastage and increased financial investment. Moreover, it created confusion among veterinary staff regarding their cutting techniques. To address this issue, the author observed that over 95% of pig farmers in the region still rely on traditional feeding methods, using a single type of feed, mainly barley, wheat, and corn. Due to prolonged rainy weather, these feeds are highly susceptible to contamination by gibberellin. It is known that the toxigenic strains of head blight produce at least two toxins: gibberellins and another compound called F-2 toxin. This F-2 toxin acts as an estrogen-like substance, leading to serious reproductive problems in pigs. It can be excreted through urine, causing irritation to the vaginal and vulvar areas, which may result in fungal vaginitis and vulvovaginitis. When pigs consume feed contaminated with gibberellin—especially barley or wheat—it can lead to sexual dysfunction, swollen and red vulvas, enlarged mammary glands, bleeding, and inflammation. Boars may develop dermatitis or penile swelling. Some pigs might also show increased excitability and skin itching. Prevention and control measures include: (1) Pig farmers should not blame the problem solely on the cutting technique; (2) Immediately stop feeding any material containing gibberellin and switch from single-feed to a balanced, varied compound feed; (3) If using grain infected with head blight, it should be limited to no more than 10% of the total diet. These steps can help reduce the risk of health issues in pigs and ensure better management practices.
