How to prevent cows from moving uneasy
Uncertainty in cow fetuses, also known as premature fetal movement syndrome, is a condition where pregnant cows experience abdominal discomfort due to noticeable fetal movements before their expected due date. This condition typically presents with symptoms such as depression, loss of appetite, restlessness, vocalization, and the presence of cloudy or bloody discharge from the vulva. Affected cows may frequently look back, attempt to urinate, and show signs of palpating the fetus in the abdomen.
Prevention plays a crucial role in managing this condition. First, proper feeding and management are essential. Maintaining the cow in good health involves providing a balanced diet that includes both concentrate and roughage in appropriate proportions. It's important to avoid feeding cold, hard, or difficult-to-digest feed. Daily exercise is also beneficial, especially during late pregnancy, but should be moderate and not overly strenuous. Avoiding sudden movements, slipping, or jumping can help prevent unnecessary strain on the abdomen. Additionally, minimizing any mechanical pressure or impact on the belly is recommended.
In cases where the condition has already developed, calming the affected animal is key. A common treatment involves intravenous administration of a mixture containing 150 ml of 10% sodium bromide, 20 ml of 10% caffeine sodium benzoate solution, 100 ml of 5% calcium chloride, and 600 ml of 5% glucose saline. This combination is usually effective with a single dose, though severe cases may require a second injection after four hours. Most cows show improvement within a short time, allowing for a quicker recovery.
If a miscarriage occurs, postpartum care becomes even more critical. Ensuring proper nutrition, rest, and monitoring will help the cow recover faster and return to reproductive health sooner. This not only supports the animal’s well-being but also helps minimize economic losses by enabling timely rebreeding. Regular observation and early intervention are vital in preventing complications and maintaining herd productivity.
