Lawn pruning method

When the grass reaches a certain height, it's important to trim it promptly to maintain its appearance and health. Cutting too much at once can harm the grass, as it reduces the leaves' ability to perform photosynthesis, which is essential for feeding the roots. Instead, only one-third of the grass blade should be removed at a time. This helps maintain the plant’s energy balance and supports root growth. If you cut too much, the roots may not receive enough nutrients, leading to weak or even dead turf. As the grass grows taller, the lower leaves often become shaded and adapt to low-light conditions. When the upper leaves are cut, these shaded leaves suddenly face direct sunlight, which can cause sunburn and damage the grass. Therefore, when the turf becomes very vigorous, the mowing height should be increased slightly. After four days, you can return to the regular mowing height to avoid over-cutting mature leaves, which could lead to sunburn and encourage weed growth. In warm-season grasses, Prunella vulgaris requires the least frequent mowing, followed by Zoysia sinica, Zoysia japonica, and Japanese zoysiagrass. On the other hand, dog beetroot and carpet grass need more frequent trimming. In cool-season grasses, Festuca arundinacea typically requires less mowing, while other species tend to grow faster and need more attention. The use of nitrogen fertilizer significantly affects lawn growth. The more nitrogen applied, the faster the grass grows, and the more frequently it needs to be mowed. Mowing frequency also depends on the season. Cold-season grasses grow rapidly in spring and fall, requiring more frequent cuts, but slow down in summer. Warm-season grasses, however, grow quickly in summer and slower in spring and autumn. In colder climates, both cold- and warm-season grasses experience reduced root activity during winter, making it important to adjust mowing height. Lowering the cutting height during these times helps reduce nutrient consumption from the above-ground parts. Watering also influences mowing frequency. More irrigation leads to faster grass growth and more frequent mowing. Conversely, under dry conditions, growth slows, and mowing becomes less necessary. It's best not to mow when the soil is wet or overly moist, as this can result in uneven cuts and clumping of grass clippings, which can block light and airflow, affecting lawn health. Grass clippings should be removed regularly. Leaving them behind can make the lawn look untidy and reduce air circulation and light penetration to the lower grass. As they decompose, they may produce harmful organic acids that weaken the root system and hinder growth. Clippings can also promote weed growth and increase the risk of pests and diseases. However, if the lawn is healthy and no disease is present, leaving clippings on the lawn during hot weather can help retain soil moisture.
