How to prevent cows from moving uneasy

Uncertainty in cow fetuses, also known as fetal restlessness, is a condition where pregnant cows experience abdominal pain due to increased and noticeable fetal movements before their expected due date. This condition typically presents with symptoms such as depression, loss of appetite, restlessness, vocalization, and the presence of cloudy or bloody fluid discharge from the vagina. Affected cows may frequently look back, attempt to urinate, and show signs of discomfort when palpating the fetus.

Prevention plays a crucial role in managing this condition. Proper feeding and management are essential to maintain the health and well-being of the pregnant cow. A balanced diet that includes both high-quality roughage and concentrates should be provided to ensure adequate nutrient intake. Avoid feeding cold, hard, or difficult-to-digest feed, as these can cause digestive issues and stress. Daily exercise is important, especially during late pregnancy, but it should be moderate and not overly strenuous. Activities like gentle walking or controlled tying exercises can help keep the cow calm and healthy without causing unnecessary strain. Additionally, it's important to avoid any situations that might lead to mechanical pressure or injury to the abdomen, such as sudden movements, overcrowding, or improper handling. Keeping the environment quiet and stress-free can significantly reduce the risk of fetal restlessness.

In cases where the condition does occur, treatment can be effective. A common approach involves intravenous administration of a combination of 10% sodium bromide (150 ml), 10% caffeine sodium benzoate solution (20 ml), 5% calcium chloride (100 ml), and 5% glucose saline (600 ml). This mixture is typically given once, and most cows show improvement within a short time. In severe cases, a second dose may be required after 4 hours to ensure full recovery.

If a miscarriage occurs, postpartum care becomes even more critical. Providing proper nutrition, rest, and monitoring will help the cow recover faster and return to breeding status sooner. This not only supports the animal’s health but also helps minimize economic losses for the farmer by ensuring the cow can become pregnant again as soon as possible.
