Don't feed chickens with hot fermented feed
During the hot season, feed is highly susceptible to moisture and heat, which can lead to spoilage and acidification. When chickens consume this contaminated feed, it can irritate the lining of the abdominal sac and cause inflammation. If the leftover feed produces excessive acid during decomposition, that acid can enter the chicken’s bloodstream through the intestinal wall, resulting in a condition known as acidosis.
Once acidosis occurs, affected chickens often show visible signs such as purple-colored combs, drooping wings, fluffed-up feathers, and a significant decrease in appetite—some may even refuse to eat altogether. In severe cases, the chickens may become weak, fall into a coma, or even die if not treated promptly.
To prevent acidosis, it's crucial to avoid feeding chickens spoiled or fermented feed. Ensure that feeding utensils are cleaned regularly and kept hygienic. When preparing or purchasing feed, avoid buying large quantities at once. Store the feed in a dry, well-ventilated, and cool area to prevent mold growth. It’s also beneficial to mix wet ingredients with the feed to improve digestion. Always provide fresh water near the feeding trough so chickens can drink freely.
If you notice any symptoms of acidosis in your flock, act quickly. Depending on the severity, you may need to adjust their diet, provide electrolytes, or consult a veterinarian for proper treatment. Early intervention is key to preventing serious health issues and reducing losses in your poultry.
