Feeding value of clover

Red and white clover are highly effective as undergrass species due to their strong regenerative capabilities, allowing them to withstand frequent grazing and heavy livestock pressure. These legumes can produce up to 3,000–4,000 kg of fresh forage per hectare. Their foliage is soft, lush, and highly palatable, making them one of the most nutritious legumes available. The dry matter content includes approximately 28.7% crude protein, 3.4% fat, 40.4% soluble carbohydrates, 28.7% minerals, 0.9% calcium, and 0.3% phosphorus, which makes them a valuable addition to any pasture system. However, compared to other grasses, red and white clover have a relatively low grass layer, resulting in a lower dry matter yield per unit area. Because of this, they are often mixed with grasses like perennial ryegrass to create a more balanced and productive pasture. This combination not only enhances the nutritional quality and overall yield of the forage but also helps suppress weed growth by quickly occupying space and maintaining a dense cover. Additionally, red and white clover play a crucial role in improving soil fertility through biological nitrogen fixation, which enriches the soil with nitrogen and supports the growth of high-yielding grasses.
