Therefore, it is essential to develop a more comprehensive understanding of bio-pesticides and to properly master the technologies involved. First, one must recognize the advanced nature of bio-pesticides. As part of early developments in bioengineering technology, their application in China began in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Bio-pesticides include microbial, biochemical, genetically modified organisms, natural enemies, and plant-based products. They can control a wide range of pests and diseases, produce pesticide-free green food, reduce environmental pollution, protect beneficial organisms, and prevent pest resistance. According to data from the Ministry of Agriculture, there are 77 registered varieties of bio-pesticides in China, accounting for 13.4% of active ingredients, and 691 products, making up 71% of all registered pesticide products. The annual production of formulations reaches nearly 100,000 tons, covering 400 million mu of farmland. While bio-pesticides are an important component of pest management, they cannot fully replace chemical pesticides. Continued research and development are needed to enhance their effectiveness and usage. Second, it's important to understand how bio-pesticides work. Unlike chemical pesticides, which act quickly, bio-pesticides typically have a slower, more gradual impact on pests. For example, high-efficiency BT first paralyzes the pest before destroying its internal organs, taking 1 to 3 days. Insect viruses, on the other hand, enter the insect’s body and use its nutrients, leading to cell disintegration over 3 to 5 days. Jinggangmycin works by preventing the binding of amino acids in the cell wall, causing abnormal growth of mycelium. Although the visual effects may be delayed compared to chemical pesticides, pests are often suppressed or rendered harmless. Therefore, it's crucial to apply them rationally based on their specific characteristics. Third, proper application techniques are key. First, follow local agricultural extension forecasts and apply bio-pesticides at the right time. Second, strictly adhere to recommended dosages and avoid adjusting concentrations arbitrarily. Third, when necessary, mix with low-toxicity pesticides to improve efficiency and safety, but avoid mixing high-efficiency BT with fungicides or acidic solutions, and do not apply it in mulberry fields. Fourth, keep the product dry and avoid exposure to moisture. Finally, choose to spray on sunny afternoons or cloudy days, and reapply if rain occurs after application. By following these guidelines, farmers can maximize the benefits of bio-pesticides while minimizing risks.
