Zhuju, also known as Sansevieria or Snake Plant, is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Liliaceae family, originally from Oceania and tropical Asia. It can grow up to 3 meters tall, with multiple branches emerging from the base. The leaves are arranged in two columns and tend to twist in groups. They are long and narrow, typically ranging from 30 cm to 50 cm in length and 5 cm to 10 cm in width. Leaf color and shape vary depending on the variety, but they often display green, purple, or pink stripes, showing a wide range of variations. Some varieties have elongated, banana-like leaves that stand tall and elegant.
Zhuju is a versatile plant that can be displayed in various settings—such as in front of a house, in courtyards, on balconies, indoors, or even along garden paths. It is hardy and easy to care for, thriving in well-drained, loose sandy loam soil. However, if the soil lacks nutrients, new leaves may become smaller. Zhuju prefers warm, humid, and partially shaded environments. It is not cold-tolerant and should be protected from direct sunlight to avoid sunburn. During winter, it's best to reduce watering to prevent root rot, while maintaining higher air humidity through regular misting.
Propagation is commonly done through cuttings between April and June. Both old stems and top cuttings can be used. Cut the stems into 15 cm sections and insert them into sand, keeping the soil moist. Roots usually appear within 20 days, though older stems may take around 30 days to root. Once the roots are strong enough, the cuttings can be transplanted when the shoots reach 5–10 cm in height. Although growing from cuttings can be a bit challenging, the plant often produces several adventitious buds, making it easy to prune and shape according to desired height and form, helping to maintain a compact and attractive appearance.
Popular cultivated varieties include Three-color Sansevieria, which features striking green, yellow, and red striped leaves; Red Sansevieria, characterized by small leaves with a green center and mostly red outer edges; and Red-billed Phoenix, known for its dense green foliage with red leaf margins. Sansevieria and Dracaena (Dragon's Blood Tree) are visually similar in terms of leaf shape, color, and overall structure, making them difficult to distinguish at first glance. However, one reliable way to tell them apart is by examining the roots: Sansevieria has white sap, while Dracaena has yellow sap.
