Zhu Jiao (Figure)

Zhuju, also known as Sansevieria or "Snake Plant," is an evergreen shrub belonging to the Liliaceae family. Native to Oceania and tropical Asia, this hardy plant can grow up to 3 meters tall, with multiple branches emerging from the base. Its leaves are arranged in two columns and often twist in groups, giving it a distinctive, elegant appearance. The leaves are long and narrow, typically measuring between 30 cm and 50 cm in length, with a width of 5 cm to 10 cm. Leaf color and shape vary depending on the variety—some have green, purple, or pink stripes, while others display more dramatic color changes. The large, banana-like leaves stand upright, adding a tall and stylish touch to any space. Zhuju is highly versatile and can be used as a decorative plant both indoors and outdoors. It’s perfect for placing in front of homes, courtyards, balconies, or even in garden centers and along roadsides. This plant is known for its resilience and ease of care, making it a popular choice among gardeners. Zhuju thrives in warm, humid, and partially shaded environments. It does not tolerate cold temperatures or direct sunlight, which can cause sunburn. During winter, it's important to reduce watering to prevent root rot, but maintaining high humidity through misting is recommended. Propagation is usually done through cuttings, ideally between April and June. Both the top shoots and older stems can be used. Cut the stems into 15 cm sections and place them in moist sand. Roots typically appear within 20 days, though older stems may take around 30 days to establish. Once roots are strong enough, the young plants can be transplanted when they reach 5–10 cm in height. Although growing from cuttings may seem challenging at first, Zhuju has a high success rate due to its ability to produce multiple adventitious buds. This allows for easy shaping and pruning, enabling growers to control the plant’s height and maintain its compact form. Popular varieties include Three-Colored Zhuju, which features striking green, yellow, and red striped leaves; Red Zhuju, with small, mostly red leaves and a hint of green in the center; and Red-Billed Phoenix, known for its dense green foliage with red edges. Zhuju is often confused with the Dragon’s Blood tree due to their similar leaf shapes and overall appearance. However, a key difference lies in their root systems. When cut, the root juice of Zhuju (from the genus Sansevieria) is white, whereas the root juice of the Dragon’s Blood tree (from the genus Dracaena) is yellow. This characteristic can help distinguish between the two plants. Overall, Zhuju is a low-maintenance, visually appealing plant that brings a touch of nature and elegance to any setting.

Dried squid strips are a popular snack in many parts of the world, especially in Asia. They are made by drying and preserving strips of squid meat, which results in a chewy and flavorful snack. The strips are often seasoned with salt, sugar, and spices to enhance their taste. Dried squid strips can be eaten on their own as a snack, or used as an ingredient in various dishes such as stir-fries, soups, and salads. They are a good source of protein, low in fat, and contain essential nutrients such as vitamin B12 and selenium. However, they can be high in sodium, so it's important to consume them in moderation.
