Autumn light branch cutting method breeding ginkgo seedlings
1. Propagation of Ginkgo biloba Cuttings. Around August 20th each year, collect the current season's shoots, cut them into 20-30 cm lengths, and immediately remove the leaves, leaving just a small petiole. Bundle 10 cuttings together and place them in a sand-bed propagation area. The moisture level and soil looseness in the propagation bed are manually controlled. After 10-15 days, the cuttings will develop root initials, and they should be transplanted before rooting occurs to ensure successful establishment.
2. Preparation of the Seedbed. Choose a location with ample sunlight, close to a water source, and with good irrigation and drainage facilities. Turn over the topsoil, mix it with sand, and remove weeds. Insecticides are applied to control underground pests. The seedbed is oriented north-south, measuring 6 meters in length and 1.5 meters in width, and is raised 20 centimeters above ground level for better drainage and air circulation.
3. Cutting Technique. Once the cuttings are ready, plant them at a spacing of 6 cm between rows and 15 cm within rows, with a planting depth of 10 cm. After inserting the cuttings into the soil, water them thoroughly and cover the bed with a plastic film to maintain humidity and temperature.
4. Shading and Protection. After planting, provide shade using a framework that stands 30 cm above the plastic cover. Materials such as corn stalks or rice straw can be used to create a light canopy, ensuring that the seedlings receive adequate but not direct sunlight. In the following spring, once the ginkgo seedlings have developed their leaves, the shading can be removed, but the structure should remain in place until September to protect the young plants from intense summer heat.
This process ensures optimal conditions for ginkgo cuttings to root successfully and grow into healthy seedlings. Proper care during the early stages significantly improves survival rates and long-term growth potential. Monitoring moisture levels, providing appropriate shade, and maintaining clean, well-drained beds are all essential steps in this propagation method.
