Beijing Pig

Beijing Hua Pig is a high-quality lean-type maternal pig breed that was developed in the mid to late 1950s. In 1984, the Beijing State Farm Management Bureau, Beijing Agricultural University, and Beijing Nanjiao Farm collaborated to develop the first generation of Beijing Hua Pig, known as the I Series. The II Series was completed in 1994, and today, the pigs commonly raised in northern China are the improved Beijing Hua Pig II. **Physical Characteristics** 1. **Beijing Hua Pig I Series**: This breed is larger in size, with a compact and sturdy build. It has a straight back, a moderate head size, a short muzzle, and slightly upward-facing ears. The head, neck, and body are well-proportioned, with a straight waistline and strong hind legs. Its limbs are tall and robust, and its coat color is black and white with clear patterns. The coloration is genetically stable, and there are also all-black or all-white variants. 2. **Beijing Hua Pig II**: This improved version has a medium-sized frame with a lighter head and a longer snout. Its ears are straight and slightly forward-leaning. The head and neck are well-proportioned, and the body is compact with a strong back. The belly remains firm, and the limbs are tall and strong. The coat color is still black and white, maintaining the breed's distinct appearance. **Production Performance** 1. **Beijing Hua Pig I Series**: Boars at six months of age typically weigh around 95 kg, while sows average about 90 kg. This breed grows quickly and has an efficient feed conversion ratio of 1:3.5. They are calm, sexually mature early, and can be bred as early as six months. Sows reach their first estrus between 160 and 185 days, with an estrus cycle of 18 to 21 days. 2. **Beijing Hua Pig II**: This series shows improved reproductive performance, with an average of 11.4 litters per sow. Pigs can reach 90 kg by 170 days, with a carcass lean meat percentage of 56.2%. When crossed with Large White pigs, the hybrid pigs reach 90 kg in 165 days, with a lean meat content exceeding 59%. Using Landrace pigs as the second sire, and female Beijing Hua pigs as the dam, three-way hybrids yield even better results, reaching 90 kg at 160 days with over 60% lean meat in the carcass.
