The zebra flower, also known as the silver-veined single flower, gets its name from the striking white striped patterns on its leaves that resemble the markings of a zebra. This evergreen shrub or perennial herb is characterized by its upright, square stems and opposite, ovate to elliptic-ovate leaves. Each leaf is typically 15 to 30 cm long and about 10 cm wide, with a glossy dark green surface and prominent wavy white veins running along the edges. The plant produces tower-shaped clusters of flowers at the top or in the axils of the stems. The flowers have a double-lip shape, with five pale yellow sepals that resemble overlapping roof tiles. They bloom throughout the year under suitable conditions. Native to the tropical and subtropical regions of South America, the zebra flower thrives in warm, humid environments but is sensitive to cold and drought. While it enjoys bright light, it should be protected from direct sunlight. For optimal growth, maintain temperatures between 18°C and 25°C. Due to its large leaves, the plant requires frequent watering and high humidity. Mist the foliage regularly and apply a diluted liquid fertilizer every 10 days during the growing season. In winter, reduce watering and keep the temperature above 10°C. If heating is used, mist the plants with room-temperature water to prevent drying out. Since the zebra flower rarely produces lateral branches, pruning is recommended to control height, improve appearance, and encourage more blooms. Remove spent flowers promptly to conserve energy. After flowering, the plant enters a dormancy period lasting 4 to 6 weeks. During this time, reduce watering and stop fertilizing. At the end of dormancy, repot the plant in a rich, well-draining soil mix containing 1/3 vermiculite or perlite. Place it in a warm, shaded area and keep the soil and air moist until new shoots appear. Propagation is easy through stem cuttings taken in early summer, or root cuttings in winter and spring. Keep the soil moist and maintain high humidity at around 25°C for successful rooting. With its unique zebra-like mottling and vibrant flowers, the zebra flower is an excellent indoor plant, ideal for small to medium pots, desks, shelves, bay windows, and balconies. It offers both leaf and flower beauty, making it a stunning addition to any space.
