If there is a perfect experiment in the world, then the recent efforts of Zhengan Bao, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University, are fully compliant.

A member of her team, Cheng-Hui Li, wanted to test the ductility of the elastomer he had just synthesized (this material is a rubber-like plastic). This material can usually be stretched two to three times its original length and can be rebounded to its original dimensions. A common stress test involves stretching the elastomer until it breaks beyond its break point.

But Li, a visiting scholar from China, encountered an unexpected difficulty: the elasticity of the fixture usually measured can only be stretched to 45 inches. To find the break point of a one-inch long sample, Li and another lab member each hold one end, then each retreat, and finally stretch the one-inch long polymer film to more than 100 inches.

Bao was shocked.

"I said, 'How is this possible? Are you sure?'" she recalls.
