Nankai University uses cheap crops to produce highly effective anticancer drugs
Paclitaxel, a widely used anti-cancer drug, is essential in hospitals around the world. In the global market, the price of a paclitaxel injection can reach as high as 1,000 yuan—several times more expensive than gold. Traditionally, the yew tree has been the primary natural source for this crucial drug. However, the yew is classified as an endangered and rare plant worldwide, raising concerns about its sustainability.
Recently, a groundbreaking development has emerged from the Fungal Laboratory at Nankai University’s School of Life Sciences. Researchers have successfully developed a new technology that enables the production of high-efficiency paclitaxel using inexpensive agricultural by-products such as rice bran. According to Zhu Xudong, the leader of the research team, this method allows for the extraction of high-purity paclitaxel with over 90% purity through fungal fermentation.
This innovative approach significantly reduces production costs, bringing the price of paclitaxel down to just one-seventh of the traditional cost. Not only does it make the drug more affordable, but it also helps protect the precious yew tree species from overharvesting. The project has already received support from China's "863" National High-Tech Research and Development Program, and the research team is now working on refining the process further to prepare for large-scale production.
Experts believe that this breakthrough could soon lead to the widespread availability of low-cost, efficient paclitaxel in pharmacies across the country, making life-saving treatment more accessible to patients in need. This advancement marks a significant step forward in both medical science and sustainable resource management.
