Nankai University uses cheap crops to produce highly effective anticancer drugs
Paclitaxel, a widely used anti-cancer drug, is one of the most important treatments in hospitals around the world. In the global market, the price of a single paclitaxel injection can reach as high as 1,000 yuan—making it far more expensive than gold. Traditionally, the yew tree has been the only natural source for extracting this crucial compound. However, the yew is classified as an endangered and rare plant globally, raising serious environmental concerns.
Recently, a groundbreaking technology developed by the Fungal Laboratory at Nankai University’s School of Life Sciences offers a promising alternative. This new method uses inexpensive agricultural by-products such as bran to produce high-efficiency paclitaxel through fungal fermentation. According to Zhu Xudong, the leader of the research team, they can extract paclitaxel with over 90% purity using this technique. The cost of production has dropped significantly—only about one-seventh of the previous price—while also reducing the pressure on natural yew resources.
This innovation not only makes the drug more affordable but also helps protect precious tree species. The project has already received support from China's "863" National High-Tech Research and Development Program. The research team is now working on refining the process further, aiming to scale up production in the near future.
Experts believe that this breakthrough could soon make paclitaxel more accessible to the general public, transforming how cancer patients receive treatment worldwide. With this advancement, the dream of affordable, efficient, and sustainable paclitaxel production is becoming a reality.
