Fairy pen

The fairy pen, also known as the Qibao tree, is a unique and resilient plant native to the arid regions of South Africa. It thrives in warm, dry, and sunny conditions, preferring well-drained sandy loam soil. This plant is not tolerant of cold temperatures and can suffer if exposed to frost. It does best in a semi-shady environment and is highly drought-resistant. Propagation of the fairy pen is typically done through cuttings or by dividing the mother plants. In May, ramets (small offshoots) are separated from the main plant and repotted. For cuttings, fleshy stem segments are taken from the internodes of healthy mother plants during the growing season. After allowing them to dry slightly, they are placed in a sand bed and kept slightly dry. Roots usually appear within 7 to 10 days, after which the cuttings can be transplanted into pots. In terms of cultivation, the fairy pen grows best under bright, indirect light. During the hot summer months, it tends to go into a semi-dormant state, so watering should be reduced to prevent root rot. In cooler summers, growth continues steadily. The plant experiences its most vigorous growth in spring and autumn, during which it should be fertilized with a PK fertilizer 2–3 times a month. However, it’s important to keep the soil slightly dry rather than overly moist to avoid overgrowth. Pruning the mother plants in autumn helps maintain a neat and uniform shape. Like many succulents, the fairy pen is susceptible to diseases such as downy mildew and leaf rot. These can be managed by spraying a diluted solution of 10% antibacterial agent 401 acetic acid at a 1000:1 ratio. Insect pests like whiteflies and aphids can be controlled using a 2.5% rattan essential oil diluted to 1000 times. The fairy pen is one of the few species in the Compositae family that produces multiple seeds. Its stems are cylindrical and have a pinkish-blue hue, resembling a pen holder. At the top of the stem, clusters of fleshy, rounded leaves grow. In winter and early spring, yellow flowers bloom at the stem tips, making it a striking addition to any indoor space. Commonly used as a potted plant, it's perfect for windowsills, desks, and coffee tables, adding both beauty and a touch of natural charm to any room.
