Bai Yunjin

This is another cactus species characterized by its hairy structure. Similar to Espostoa and Cephalocereus, these plants are native to high-altitude regions. The slender hairs serve as a natural protection against the intense sunlight found at higher elevations. While they all belong to the same genus, there are notable differences in hair length and density. Some species have shorter hairs concentrated near the base, while others feature longer, more extensive coverage that completely envelops the plant. In terms of appearance, these cacti also fall into two main categories: tall varieties that can reach several meters in height, and dwarf species that remain compact. Native to northern Argentina, Bolivia, southern Peru, and Chile, these plants were originally classified under the Cereus genus. As they mature, their yellow-green fruits develop and eventually split open from the base, releasing small black seeds. Each variety has distinct characteristics that set them apart, yet they all maintain a unique and striking presence. The cactus features two types of spines: short, white ones located on the sides, which are less noticeable beneath the dense hair, and longer, colored spines on the central area. These colored spines can range from yellow to orange or red, making them stand out against the background. The combination of these spines and the prominent hair layer creates a distinctive and eye-catching form. Flowers appear only on mature plants, and they are long and narrow with a very small opening. These cacti primarily rely on self-pollination, which means the flowers don’t fully open. The blooms are typically pink or red and measure around 8 centimeters in length. Their limited openness is an adaptation that helps conserve moisture in their arid environments. For optimal growth, this cactus thrives in full sun, well-draining sandy soil, and during dry, dormant periods. While it can be planted directly in the ground, its growth rate is quite slow—often taking several years for a young plant to reach the flowering stage. To speed up the process, grafting is recommended, especially for beginners. This method can significantly reduce the time required for the plant to mature and bloom, making it a more practical choice for enthusiasts.

Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is a potentially fatal contagious disease that can affect almost any part of the body but is mainly aninfection of the lungs. It is caused by a bacterial microorganism, the tubercle bacillus or Mycobacterium tuberculosis.Although TB can be treated, cured, and can be prevented if persons at risk take certain drugs, scientists have never comeclose to wiping it out. Few diseases have caused so much distressing illness for centuries and claimed so many lives.
