Hainan Island found "oil tree"
Petroleum plant emulsions are rich in hydrocarbons, some of which resemble those found in natural crude oil. To date, thousands of oil-producing plants have been discovered worldwide and are considered potential future substitutes for petroleum. One such plant is "Wu Gou Hua Xin" (Five Dogs and Flowers Heart), a tropical oil plant known as the horned melon. It blooms with flowers that have five small stamens surrounding the central stamen, giving it a unique appearance. This plant, scientifically called Crotalaria melon, is cultivated along the southwest coast of Qiongdao and on sandy beaches in the southern part of Hainan. It grows at an astonishing rate—up to 30 centimeters per week. The stems and leaves of this plant contain hydrocarbons, which can be extracted through either dissolution or mechanical methods. Additionally, its white sap can be processed to produce oil.
Other promising oil plants include rubber trees and coconut trees. The latex from rubber trees contains hydrocarbons with a molecular structure similar to petroleum, and it has a high calorific value ranging from 9,000 to 10,000 kcal per kilogram. When distilled, it can yield a gasoline-like liquid fuel. In Hainan, coconut oil is also being used as an alternative fuel source. A blend of 20% diesel and 80% coconut oil, known as "coconut diesel," is widely used in engines and has proven effective for long-term operation. These natural oil sources highlight the growing importance of plant-based alternatives in the global energy landscape. As research continues, more discoveries may lead to sustainable and renewable fuel solutions.
