Hainan Island found "oil tree"
Petroleum plant emulsions are rich in hydrocarbons, many of which resemble those found in natural crude oil. Over the years, thousands of oil-producing plants have been discovered globally, and they are often considered potential substitutes for fossil fuels in the future. One such plant is known as "Five Dogs and Flowers Heart" (also called *Crotalaria melon*), found on Hainan Island. During its flowering season, the stamens of the flower resemble five small dogs surrounding the central stamen, giving it a unique appearance. This tropical plant is native to the southern and southwestern coasts of Hainan, particularly growing on sandy beaches. It has an extremely fast growth rate—reaching about 30 centimeters per week. Its stems and leaves contain significant amounts of hydrocarbons, which can be extracted through either solvent or mechanical methods. Additionally, the white sap from the plant can be processed into oil.
Other promising oil plants include rubber trees and coconut trees. The latex from rubber trees contains hydrocarbons with a molecular structure similar to petroleum, and it has a high calorific value ranging from 9,000 to 10,000 kcal per kilogram. When distilled, it can produce a liquid fuel resembling gasoline. In Hainan, coconut oil is also being used as an alternative fuel source. A blend of 20% diesel and 80% coconut oil, known as "coconut diesel," is used in engines designed to run efficiently over long periods. These plants represent a growing area of research in renewable energy, offering sustainable alternatives to traditional petroleum-based fuels. As global demand for cleaner energy increases, the development of such oil-rich plants could play a crucial role in reducing dependence on fossil fuels.
