**Cultural Appreciation:**
A poem by Wang Wei titled *"Xin Yi Wu"* reflects the beauty and solitude of the magnolia flower:
*"At the end of the wood, hibiscus blooms; Red dragonflies flit through the mountain."*
*"Alone, no one opens, no one sees it fall."*
This poem, part of Wang Wei’s pastoral series, captures the quiet elegance of the magnolia. The flower, known as "wooden hibiscus," is described as blooming at the tip of branches, resembling a brush. Its vibrant petals and color resemble lotus flowers, making it a symbol of spring and renewal.
**Economic Importance:** Xinyi is not only a valuable herbal medicine with astringent, anti-hypertensive, analgesic, and antibacterial properties but also used in flavoring, perfumes, and high-end food products.
Nanzhao County in our city is renowned as the "First County of Xinyi in the World." With over 80,000 mu of magnolia cultivation, it produces 16,000 tons of fresh medicinal material annually. Nanzhao Magnolia is of the highest quality, containing 3.78% volatile oil—highest in the country.
The county has a long history of cultivating magnolia, dating back over 700 years. The *Compendium of Materia Medica* from the Ming Dynasty mentions that "Xinyi grows in the Han and Danyang Road," referring to the Hanshui River basin.
In 1977, Nanzhao Xinyi was officially recognized as authentic in the National Pharmacopoeia. In 1991, it won a gold medal at the International Exposition of Chinese Medicine in Nanyang. In March 2000, Nanzhao County was designated as the "Hometown of Xinyi Economic Forest" by the State Forestry Administration.
Xinyi continues to play a vital role in both traditional medicine and modern applications, reflecting the deep cultural and economic significance of this remarkable plant.
