Winter Breeding of Rabbits

In order to ensure successful breeding of rabbits during the winter season, it is essential to select high-quality breeds. For male rabbits, choose those that are between 8 to 10 months old and weigh over 3.5 kilograms. They should have a well-proportioned body, a straight back, quick movements, a good appetite, thick legs, a shiny coat, and strong sexual drive with high-quality semen. Female rabbits should be between 6 to 8 months old, weighing more than 3 kilograms. They should be healthy, calm in temperament, have a glossy coat, clean genital areas, regular estrus cycles, at least four pairs of nipples, strong maternal instincts, and a tendency for multiple births. Winter breeding requires attention to the natural estrus cycle of rabbits, which typically lasts 7 to 17 days, with each cycle lasting 1 to 3 days. It's important to recognize these signs and breed at the right time. The best time for mating is during sunny midday when rabbits are most active and have a stronger desire to mate. Breeding can also be done just before sunset and one hour after sunset, as this is another period of increased sexual activity. After mating, gently pat the female rabbit’s hindquarters to stimulate uterine contractions and improve the chances of conception. You can also use the "double mating" method, where two different males are used in the morning and evening, or the "repeated breeding" method, where the same male mates the female twice in one day to increase fertility. To keep rabbits healthy in winter, it's crucial to maintain a warm, dry, and clean environment. The ideal temperature for rabbit housing is between 10°C and 25°C. Ensure the house is well-insulated and the temperature stays above 10°C, but not below 5°C. On warm and sunny days, allow the rabbits to go outside for some sunlight and fresh air. Avoid smoking inside the rabbit house to prevent gas poisoning and respiratory issues. Nutrition plays a vital role in maintaining the health of pregnant rabbits during winter. Their diet should include at least 30% green feed such as wild vegetables, cabbage leaves, and carrots. Supplement with ingredients like wheat bran, rice bran, soybean meal, fishmeal, and bone meal. Avoid feeding them single-type feeds. Always provide enough clean water after each meal to aid digestion. Never feed them vegetables or grass that are dirty, moldy, or frost-covered. Disease prevention is also critical during the cold season. In addition to keeping rabbits warm, regularly feed them garlic, ginger, and yeast tablets to strengthen their immunity. If any rabbit shows signs of illness, isolate it immediately and treat it symptomatically to prevent the spread of disease. Regular monitoring and prompt action can significantly reduce the risk of outbreaks.
