Winter Breeding of Rabbits
1. When breeding rabbits in winter, it's important to select high-quality breeds. Male rabbits should be between 8 to 10 months old and weigh over 3.5 kilograms, while females should be 6 to 8 months old and weigh more than 3 kilograms. A good male rabbit should have a well-proportioned body, a long back, strong limbs, a shiny coat, and show active behavior and strong sexual desire. The semen quality should be excellent. Female rabbits need to be healthy, calm, with a glossy coat, clean genital area, normal estrus cycles, at least four pairs of nipples, strong maternal instincts, and high fertility.
2. Breeding season in winter requires careful timing. Rabbits are less active, and their estrus cycle typically lasts 7 to 17 days, with the estrus period lasting 1 to 3 days. It’s essential to understand the signs of estrus and breed promptly. The best time for mating is during sunny midday when the rabbits are most active and have a strong libido. Breeding can also be done one hour before sunset and one hour after sunset, as these are also times of increased sexual activity. After mating, gently pat the female’s hindquarters to stimulate uterine contractions and help retain the semen, which increases the chances of successful pregnancy. You can use the "double mating" method by using two different males—one in the morning and one in the evening—or the "repeat breeding" method, where the same male mates the female twice in a day to improve litter size.
3. Ensure proper insulation in the rabbit house during winter. Rabbits prefer dry, clean environments with temperatures between 10°C and 25°C. Keep the indoor temperature above 10°C and avoid it dropping below 5°C. On warm, sunny days, allow the rabbits to go outside for some sunlight exposure. Avoid smoking inside the rabbit house to prevent gas poisoning or respiratory issues.
4. Improve nutrition during winter. Pregnant females should receive at least 30% green feed like wild vegetables, cabbage leaves, and carrots in their diet. Include supplements such as wheat bran, rice bran, soybean meal, fishmeal, and bone meal. Avoid feeding them only one type of food. Always provide fresh water after each feeding to aid digestion. Do not feed any vegetables, grass, or hay that is muddy, moldy, or frosted.
5. Disease prevention is crucial in winter. In addition to keeping rabbits warm, regularly feed them garlic, ginger, and yeast tablets to boost immunity. If a rabbit shows symptoms of illness, isolate it immediately and treat it accordingly to prevent the spread of disease. Regular monitoring and prompt action are key to maintaining a healthy rabbitry.
